Promote and help create places within Canada’s vast frontier where people can go to enjoy the simple pleasure of seeing the stars and constellations, as our pioneer ancestors did. With the ever increasing sizes of our towns and cities, one of Canada’s most basic natural resources is being destroyed by electric lights: our pristine dark night time sky.

Primary audience: Canadians in urban centres.

Objectives: To create Dark-Sky Preserves and Reserves in every part of Canada where Canadians who have forgotten, or who have never experienced, a pristine view of the wondrous clear, dark, night sky can see it as it was before the development of large populations and associated light pollution. To preserve access to dark skies for future generations.

Reach of program: Accessible locations in every Province and territory.

Potential partners in the implementation of this activity: Leadership by RASC & FAAQ; CASCA and University astronomy departments; First Nations Peoples led by the Cape Breton First Nations and Inuit Committee; provincial and national parks.
